Neo 4K packs: which one to buy, and why

Two choices, and only one of them is reversible cheaply

A Neo 4K order asks you for two decisions. The term is the one people deliberate over - three months at $17.00, six at $33.00, twelve at $45.00, twenty-four at $75.00 - and it is genuinely the less important of the two. The pack is the one that gets four seconds of thought and determines whether you enjoy the subscription at all.

The reason is simple enough to state in a sentence. The term decides how long the line lives. The pack decides what is on it. A twenty-four month subscription to the wrong pack is not a better subscription than three months of the right one; it is the same disappointment, held for two years.

So the order in which to think about it is the reverse of the order the form presents. Work out the pack first, from what your household actually watches. Then pick the term on how long you want to stop thinking about the whole business.

What the three packs are for

Neo 4K sells three: USA, Europe and Arabic. They are not tiers, there is no ranking between them and none of them is the premium one. They are three different answers to the question of which part of the world your television comes from.

• USA. Built around American networks, American sport and the American cable tier. The pack for a household whose viewing habits were formed in the United States, wherever the household now lives.
• Europe. The national broadcasters and the sport of the European countries, which in practice means a household that wants its own country's channels plus the continental football.
• Arabic. The Arabic-language broadcasters, news and entertainment. Chosen by households who want to watch in Arabic, and the pack most often bought by people living a long way from where those channels originate.

The useful question is not which pack has the most channels. It is which pack contains the fifteen channels you would actually miss. Write that list down before you open the order form - the exercise takes two minutes and it is remarkably clarifying, because most people discover their real list is shorter and more regionally concentrated than they assumed.

The mistake that generates the most support tickets

It is this: buying the pack for where you live rather than for what you watch.

An expatriate household in Europe that watches Arabic television buys the Europe pack because Europe is the address on the card, and is then surprised that the channels it wanted are in the Arabic pack. The same thing happens in reverse. The pack is not a delivery region and it has nothing to do with where you are sitting - a Neo 4K line works from anywhere with an internet connection. It is a description of the content, not of the customer.

If your household is genuinely split - one person watching American sport, another watching Arabic news - then say so before you buy rather than after. Two lines is often the honest answer, and it comes with the side benefit of two simultaneous streams, which a split household usually wanted anyway.

The adult flag is a real decision, not a formality

Every pack is sold in two versions, with adult channels and without. This is worth a deliberate moment rather than an absent-minded click.

Leaving the option off does not place those channels behind a PIN in the player. It means they are not delivered to your line, so they are absent from the category list, absent from search, and absent from whatever "recently added" row your player chooses to build. There is nothing for a child to stumble into, because there is nothing there.

Turning it on cannot be undone from the sofa either. It is an attribute of the line on the panel, so changing your mind in either direction means a message to support rather than a setting. Decide it at checkout, with whoever else uses the television.

Now pick the term

With the pack settled, the term is arithmetic. The per-month cost falls steeply as the term lengthens, and the whole amount is paid once at the start. Nothing is stored to charge you again, nothing renews on its own, and there is no notice period, because there is no rolling contract to give notice on.

That last point cuts both ways and it deserves saying plainly. The absence of an automatic renewal means nobody can quietly bill you in eleven months' time. It also means nobody will remind you, and a term that lapses on a Friday evening stays lapsed until somebody does something about it. Put the expiry date in a calendar on the day you buy.

The conservative approach, and the one worth recommending to anyone who has not used a service like this before, is to buy three months first. It is the shortest term Neo 4K sells and it is enough to watch properly through a full billing cycle of your own internet connection, across a weekend of sport, on the device you will really use. If it suits you, renew long. If it does not, you have spent $17.00 finding out.

Test it against the evening that matters

Whatever pack you choose, judge it at the worst moment rather than the most convenient one. Residential connections and streaming infrastructure are both under their heaviest load on a weekday evening, and that is also when you actually watch. A service sampled at two in the afternoon has been sampled under conditions you will rarely be in.

Open the channels from your list of fifteen, not the ones at the top of the category. Leave each one running for ten minutes rather than ten seconds, because a feed that stumbles once every four minutes looks flawless in a quick check and ruins a match. And do it on the screen you will really use, not on a phone - a phone on a strong signal proves the service is delivering something, and proves nothing at all about the box behind the television at the far end of the house from the router.
